Neil Nitin Mukesh’s last film Jail met with a thanda response. It didn’t help that Madhur Bhandarkar’s court case also got pulled up at the time of the film’s release. No amount of nudity, bad language or gritty drama could convince the audience to sit through the torture that was Jail.

Neil has less reason to worry about Jail, and gather all his hopes around his upcoming flick Tera Kya Hoga Johnny. Directed by art house filmmaker Sudhir Mishra, this film just might do the trick for Neil this year. The film is not yet up for release but a source who has seen the film at a preview screening says, “The film is not about Neil but a bunch of actors/models including Soha Ali and Karan Nath. Here Johnny is not Neil, unlike Johnny Gaddar, which was about him, but people might make that association and go for the film, seeing that it could be an extension of Neil’s debut character two years ago.”

So what is Tera Kya Hoga Johnny about?

Johnny (played by Sikandar Agarwal), the title character is a migrant kid who makes his living in Mumbai serving chai. His daily routine brings him closer to a few of his customers – a drug addict, Vishal (Karan Nath), a model/ actor, Preeti (Soha Ali Khan) and Parvez (Neil Nitin Mukesh). Johnny hopes that someday one of his customers will help him find a better life and facilitate his goal to work in Dubai.

The source adds, “The closest Neil can get to his Johnny character is that in this film little Johnny helps plan a heist from a corrupt police officer’s house. This is the only similarity he has with his Johnny Gaddar character of a small time crook. Neil might not be able to gain much from this film as it is an ensemble cast and he does not play the main lead.”

We’ll just have to then wait for his gritty film with Deepika Padukone which he is currently shooting for. But that’s a long time from now in 2010. Till then, no show from Neil eh!
